# Standard Ebooks package inspection

Observed October 5, 2026, using Python 3.14.3 and curl. The source is Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice at https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/jane-austen/pride-and-prejudice.

Download `inspect.py` and run `python3 inspect.py` with Python 3 and curl installed. It makes three sequential requests to the source record's compatible, advanced, and Kobo EPUB download destinations and prints JSON. Ebook bytes stay in memory; it does not extract files or modify your library. This script is deliberately scoped to these three known files, not arbitrary untrusted archives. Network, archive, or XML failures stop execution rather than produce a passing result.

The site's nominal download URL returned an XHTML announcement with a meta-refresh to the same URL plus `?source=download`. The script follows that inspected destination explicitly. If the site changes its delivery mechanism, inspect the current page before changing the script. The initial attempt to inspect the announcement as a ZIP failed; no results from that failed attempt were included.

`observations.json` records the successful requests, exact URLs, SHA-256 hashes, byte sizes, ZIP CRC results, package versions/languages, manifest and spine counts, missing references, image media-type counts, and XML elements whose class tokens include `koboSpan`. Upstream revisions may change any of these values. No retry was needed for the three successful binary requests. AZW3 was excluded because this is an EPUB ZIP/XML inspection.

Limitations: not EPUBCheck, device rendering, chapter counting, navigation-fragment validation, text equivalence, proofreading, content completeness, DRM detection, rights clearance, or translation testing. Manifest checks cover the declared resources in these observed packages. No third-party book text or cover image is redistributed here.

The script and explanatory notes are original BookTranslator materials. You may reuse or adapt them with attribution; the upstream books retain their own notices and rights statements.
