# Word field structural specimen

Created 2026-10-01 for the cross-reference translation guide. These are deliberately synthetic, minimal WordprocessingML packages, not customer documents or measured translation outputs.

- `source-specimen.docx`: English caption target `Inspection results`.
- `localized-source-specimen.docx`: only that bookmarked source is changed to French `Résultats de contrôle`. Field instructions and bookmark identity stay identical; cached REF text remains English to expose the source/result distinction.
- Both contain six body fields (TOC, SEQ, REF, PAGEREF, deliberately broken REF, table SUM) and one header PAGE field.
- The specimen heading uses outline level 0. Its TOC includes the `\u` switch to collect outline-level paragraphs, alongside `\o "1-3"` and `\h`; it does not assume a Heading1 style is present.
- Page values of 9 are deliberately stale placeholders. `MissingTarget` intentionally has no bookmark. Do not submit this specimen as a finished document.

Only ZIP/XML structure and inventory were checked. Neither desktop Word rendering/field refresh nor BookTranslator translation was tested. Open a copy in desktop Word, refresh the fields in the relevant regions, and inspect every target before using the workflow on a real document. The broken target must be repaired explicitly; updating is not a substitute for repair.

Basis: Microsoft Update fields, Create a cross-reference, and OpenXML SimpleField documentation, linked in the article. This specimen demonstrates dependency structure, not a tool-quality benchmark.
