How to Add an EPUB to Kobo: USB, Cloud Import, and File Checks

To add an EPUB to a Kobo eReader, start with an unprotected .epub file and choose an import method your device supports. USB is the straightforward computer-to-reader route; Google Drive and Dropbox work on a specific set of Kobo models. You do not need to convert an ordinary EPUB into a Kindle format first. Kobo documents direct EPUB transfer in its USB import instructions.

The main troubleshooting distinction is file, connection, import, then reading. A charging cable can fail to transfer data. A linked cloud account can contain a book in the wrong folder. A transferred book can still have broken chapter links. Changing the ebook format will not fix all three.

Choose the Route Before Changing the File

If you bought the book directly from Kobo, try the normal account sync first. The manual workflows below are for a separate file you want to add; Kobo's cloud-import guidance distinguishes these personal documents from store purchases.

An ACSM file needs a different workflow: Kobo's library guide explains that Adobe Digital Editions uses the license to retrieve the ebook. Follow the current ADE authorization and transfer instructions, rather than renaming .acsm to .epub or putting it into a cloud-import folder.

An .epub extension alone does not establish that a book is unprotected. Kobo's content-protection explanation distinguishes downloadable, DRM-free EPUBs from protected purchases. Being able to read a book in its original app is not proof that you have a file available for unrestricted copying or uploading.

Add an EPUB by USB

1. Turn on the Kobo and connect it to your computer with a suitable USB data cable.
2. Accept the connection prompt on the reader.
3. Open the drive named KOBOeReader on your computer and copy the EPUB into it.
4. Safely eject the drive, disconnect the cable, and let the reader finish importing.
5. Find the title in the book library and open it.

These steps follow Kobo's official non-protected EPUB transfer guide. Keep the original computer file until you have checked the reading copy.

If the reader charges but never appears as a drive, investigate the connection first. Some cables provide power without data; a USB hub or port can also be the problem. Try a known data-capable cable connected directly to the computer before repairing a book that has not reached the device. Kobo lists these checks in its USB connection troubleshooting guide.

Use Google Drive or Dropbox on a Supported Model

At the September 8, 2026 documentation check, Kobo listed Kobo Forma, Kobo Sage, Kobo Elipsa, Kobo Elipsa 2E, and Kobo Libra Colour for these cloud integrations. Check the exact model rather than assuming every Kobo supports them. The service-specific requirements differ: Google Drive requires software 4.37 or later; Dropbox requires 4.18 or later.

Google Drive

On Wi-Fi, open More → My Google Drive and start setup. Enter the reader's code at kobo.com/googledrive and authorize the intended account.

Put the EPUB in the automatically created Rakuten Kobo folder, then refresh the reader's Drive view and download it. See the official Google Drive instructions.

Dropbox

Kobo's help guide starts setup under More → Settings → Accounts → Dropbox. Use the reader's code at kobo.com/dropbox to link the intended account.

For this service, the import folder is Apps/Rakuten Kobo inside Dropbox. Add the EPUB there, then refresh My Dropbox on the reader and download the title. Follow Kobo's Dropbox instructions if the menus or authorization need attention.

Cloud import is a way to fetch a local reading copy. Kobo's cloud-file guide describes downloaded documents as stored on the device; removing a downloaded copy does not remove the cloud original. Do not assume that adding your own EPUB creates the same library behavior as purchasing a Kobo book. Kobo explicitly says USB-imported books do not appear on other readers or apps through Sync.

Three Cases That Point to Different Fixes

These are illustrative troubleshooting cases, not reports of device tests or customer incidents.

Case 1: The reader charges, but the computer shows no drive

You have a small EPUB that opens on your laptop. Plugging in the Kobo shows charging, but there is no storage drive to copy it to.

The last successful step is power delivery, not file transfer. Test another data cable and a direct port using the USB checks above. Re-exporting the EPUB is premature: no evidence yet points to its contents.

Case 2: Drive is linked, but the book is missing

You linked a Kobo Libra Colour but put the book in My Drive/Books, outside the import folder described above. Check placement before investigating EPUB damage. Account authorization and file availability are separate conditions: evidence that one succeeded does not establish the other.

Case 3: The book opens, but its contents menu lands in the wrong place

The import completed and the first chapter is readable. Selecting chapter two from the contents menu produces the wrong result.

Now compare the same link in the source EPUB using another EPUB-capable reader. If the source is also wrong, look for a corrected edition or repair the export; changing a USB cable will not recreate a missing link target. If the source works, record the exact destination and investigate the device-specific reading result. Import success alone cannot decide which side is responsible.

A Small File Check You Can Reproduce

Download our original two-chapter EPUB sample and four-stage import checklist. The sample, A Small Reading Check, contains newly written English text, accented characters, and two chapter links. It contains no third-party book text. The sample notes include reuse permission and the scope of testing.

We checked the actual sample's ZIP integrity, EPUB entry and metadata, declared resources, reading order, and both chapter-link destinations locally. We also created a private comparison copy with one link deliberately changed to a nonexistent heading.

The file-check results CSV records each result. This demonstrates a narrow point: a sound ZIP archive can still contain a broken reading link. These were structural checks, not full EPUB conformance validation. We did not import either file through a Kobo account or test a physical eReader; the broken copy is not offered as a reading download.

You can use the good sample as a comparison on your own device. Keep the route and account the same, try the sample, then try your book, and record the last successful stage for each. If both fail before file selection, inspect the shared connection or account first. If only the larger book fails, compare its protection, structure, and content. A tiny reflowable sample cannot prove support for an illustrated textbook or a different writing system.

Check the Reading Copy Before You Settle In

Open the contents menu and jump to an early and a late chapter. Increase the font size and inspect a paragraph with accents or punctuation. If your book has notes, illustrations, or a complicated layout, check an example of each. Close and reopen the title so you know what your own reader preserves.
