How to Review a Translated Research Paper
Review a translated research paper without changing its claims, statistics, equations, citations, tables, figures, or disclosures.

Review a translated research paper in risk order, not from page one to the references in a single proofreading pass. First verify the paper's claims and numerical evidence. Then lock notation, citations, tables, figures, terminology, disclosures, and completeness. Only after those gates pass should you spend time polishing target-language style.

Separate Translation Review From Scientific Review
A translation review asks whether the target paper faithfully represents the approved source and works in the target language. It does not rerun the study, validate the data, or certify the research design.
Keep three workstreams distinct:

One person may fill more than one role, but the log should state which role produced each decision. Do not silently “improve” a claim during translation review because the source seems weak. Record a source-author query instead.
If you still need to create the draft, begin with how to translate a research paper without breaking its structure. This article begins after a source and target file are available.
Freeze the Source and Create a Review Baseline
Record the source version, target version, translation date, tool or workflow, target locale, intended journal or audience, and responsible reviewers. Stop if the source is still changing. Otherwise, corrections can be mistaken for translation defects and the target will always trail an undefined master.
Create a structure inventory for both files:
- title, abstract, keywords, and highlights;
- main headings and subheadings;
- paragraphs, lists, and appendices;
- equations and numbered expressions;
- tables, figures, captions, and callouts;
- in-text citations and reference entries;
- acknowledgments, funding, conflicts, ethics, registration, and data statements; and
- supplementary-material references.
Count and compare before reviewing prose. A missing table or duplicated paragraph is a blocker even when every remaining sentence is fluent.
Review the Claim Chain First
Start with the abstract, then the Results, then the Conclusion. For each headline claim, trace this chain:
target claim → source claim → reported result → population and method → limitation or uncertainty
Check especially:
- direction: increased versus decreased, benefit versus harm;
- magnitude: decimal point, percentage, absolute value, or ratio;
- scope: all participants versus a subgroup;
- time: baseline, follow-up, or duration;
- certainty: may, suggests, associated with, causes, proves;
- comparison: higher than, non-inferior to, no significant difference; and
- boundary: the condition under which the statement is true.
The most dangerous defect is often a sentence that sounds more confident in the target language than the source evidence allows. Do not fix this by making every sentence vague. Match the source's actual level of certainty.
Review the abstract and conclusion against each other after individual checks. A translated conclusion can drift away from an accurately translated Results section.
Lock Numbers, Units, and Statistical Meaning
Numbers are not automatically safe because they were not translated.
For every headline result and a risk-based sample of the rest, compare:
- sign, decimal separator, and significant digits;
- percentage versus percentage-point change;
- ratio, rate, prevalence, and absolute count;
- numerator, denominator, and sample size;
- mean versus median;
- standard deviation, standard error, confidence interval, and range;
- p-value and comparison operator;
- unit, scale, and time period; and
- table or figure label attached to the value.
The ICMJE manuscript recommendations advise reporting statistical methods in enough detail for an informed reader to judge and verify the analysis, quantifying findings with uncertainty where possible, distinguishing clinical from statistical significance, defining symbols, and identifying software and versions. A translation should not collapse these distinctions.
Do not convert units unless the editorial plan requires it. If units are converted, preserve the source value, method, rounding rule, and reviewer approval. A unit conversion is a content transformation, not ordinary translation.
Protect Equations, Symbols, and Identifiers
Compare every equation or use a notation-aware diff when possible. Check:
- operators and relation signs;
- variable names and Greek letters;
- superscripts, subscripts, and accents;
- parentheses, brackets, fractions, roots, and vectors;
- equation numbering and cross-references;
- inline versus displayed math; and
- surrounding prose that defines each symbol.
Also lock identifiers that should normally remain stable: DOI URLs, ORCID iDs, trial or registry numbers, accession numbers, gene symbols, catalog numbers, email addresses, URLs, and software names.
A formula can render correctly while its explanation assigns a different meaning to a variable. Review notation and prose together.
Verify Citations as Links Between Claims and Sources
For each sampled citation, confirm that the target marker points to the same reference as the source and still supports the same statement. Then compare the full reference inventory.
The ICMJE recommendations state that authors are responsible for citation accuracy and recommend checking references against a bibliographic source such as PubMed or the original source. Crossref provides a Simple Text Query that can help match reference strings to DOI records, but a successful match is not proof that the cited work supports the sentence.
Check:
- missing, duplicated, or renumbered references;
- citation ranges and grouped citations;
- author names, title, journal or publisher, year, volume, pages, and DOI;
- preprint, in-press, retracted, or corrected status where material;
- cross-references from tables and figure captions; and
- untranslated reference titles only when the target journal's style requires a translated title.
Do not translate DOI strings, URLs, journal names, database identifiers, or reference keys.
Review Methods With a Reproducibility Lens
The Methods section is terminology-dense, but consistency alone is not enough. Verify that the target preserves:
- study design;
- eligibility and exclusion criteria;
- recruitment and sampling;
- intervention, exposure, and comparator;
- outcome definitions and time points;
- instruments, materials, and settings;
- preprocessing and analysis steps;
- prespecified versus exploratory analyses; and
- software, package, and version information.
For health research, the EQUATOR Network describes reporting guidelines as structured tools that list the minimum information needed for a manuscript to be understood, replicated, used in decisions, or included in reviews. Use the guideline appropriate to the study design as a completeness aid, including an official translation where one exists, but do not assume a translated checklist automatically changes the journal's required language or version.
If a source term has multiple plausible target equivalents, add it to the project glossary with context and an approved definition. Search the complete target paper after approval; fixing one occurrence is not enough.
Check Tables, Figures, and Captions as One System
Review each table row and figure as a relationship between data and labels.
For tables:
- header belongs to the correct column;
- row label stays paired with its values;
- units, footnote markers, and abbreviations remain attached;
- decimal alignment and negative signs are visible;
- merged cells have not changed the reading order; and
- total, subtotal, and denominator labels are unambiguous.
For figures:
- figure number, callout, caption, and image agree;
- axis labels, legends, annotations, and embedded text follow the localization plan;
- colors, shapes, or patterns still map to the right series;
- image cropping has not removed information; and
- the caption does not add an interpretation absent from the source.
Text embedded inside an image requires a separate localization and production step. A translated caption does not repair an untranslated diagram.
Preserve Disclosures and Publication-Critical Statements
Compare these sections line by line:
- funding and sponsor roles;
- conflicts of interest;
- ethics approval and consent;
- study or protocol registration;
- data, code, and materials availability;
- author contributions;
- acknowledgments; and
- AI or language-assistance disclosure required by the target venue.
Do not strengthen, summarize, or omit them for style. Keep organization names and identifiers exact unless an approved official translation exists.
Check the target journal's current author instructions before submission. A general translation checklist cannot establish journal-specific disclosure, formatting, or authorship compliance.
Use Risk-Based Sampling Without Pretending It Is Complete Review
When a full bilingual line review is impossible, sample deliberately:
- every headline claim in the abstract and conclusion;
- every primary outcome and its uncertainty;
- every formula and publication-critical disclosure;
- one instance of each table and figure pattern;
- the first occurrence and later recurrence of each high-risk term;
- a passage from the opening, middle, and end of each major section; and
- any segment flagged by the translator or tool.
Record the sampling rule and the unreviewed remainder. A sampled pass means “no blocker found in this defined sample,” not “the whole paper is correct.” If two similar major errors appear, expand the review because the cause is probably systematic.
Final Research-Paper Translation Gate
Approve only when:
- the source and target versions are frozen and identifiable;
- abstract, Results, and Conclusion preserve the same claim chain;
- numbers, units, uncertainty, formulas, and identifiers pass;
- citation markers resolve to the same references;
- methods and terminology pass domain review;
- tables, figures, captions, and callouts remain paired;
- disclosures and reporting-critical sections are complete;
- all blockers and majors are fixed and retested in the final file; and
- the review record states what was checked, by whom, and what remains outside scope.
