To open a DjVu book, use a reader that explicitly supports .djvu or .djv, such as SumatraPDF on Windows or Okular with DjVu support. Open the downloaded file inside that application, check a few pages, and try searching for a phrase you can see. You do not need to convert a readable book just because its extension is unfamiliar.

Keep three questions separate: Can the pages open? Does the text match those pages? Does your next device or tool accept the format? Our checks on a 251-page book and three original sample files show why. A DjVu can display correctly but contain no searchable words—or the wrong ones. Converting it to PDF can preserve page images while leaving behind its extractable text.

This guide starts with a file you already have permission to use. For obtaining one from an archive, use the separate Internet Archive download guide.

Open the Book in a Compatible Reader

Windows: Start with SumatraPDF

SumatraPDF's format list explicitly includes DjVu. Download it from the official site, then open your book from within the application instead of relying on the file's default app association.

Its documented keyboard controls give you a short reading check:

  1. Press Ctrl + O and select the DjVu file.
  2. Use Ctrl + 2 to fit the page width, or Ctrl + 0 to fit the whole page.
  3. Use Ctrl + G to visit a page in the middle of the book; check the beginning and end too.
  4. Press Ctrl + F and search for a short phrase visible on a body page.

These are documentation-based instructions, not a Windows compatibility test we performed. SumatraPDF is Windows-only; do not look for a Mac download under the same name.

Linux: Check That Okular Has DjVu Support

Okular lists DjVu among its document formats. Install it through the route appropriate to your distribution and open the local file. KDE notes that some installations separate format support into modules, so a reader installation alone may not establish that the required DjVu component is present. Follow the official installation guidance if a known-good DjVu is rejected.

Mac: Verify the Package, Not Just the App Name

The DjVu project documents DjView as a separate cross-platform viewer, but its download page includes legacy Mac packages. Check the package's macOS and processor requirements before installing it. KDE currently labels its Mac Okular downloads untested nightly builds, so we would not present them as a verified stable-reader recommendation.

Our macOS evidence below comes from locally built DjVuLibre command-line tools, not a tested Mac GUI reader. If you cannot obtain a compatible reader and already use command-line tools, the bounded PDF-conversion path below is an alternative. Do not install an old browser plug-in merely to make the file open.

Check Images, Text, and the Next Task Separately

Use a copy and keep the original unchanged. Start with the title or chapter opener, a middle page, and the last page. Zoom until the smallest relevant text is readable. A file that opens at page one has not yet passed a whole-book check.

Then search for a visible phrase and, if your reader supports it, copy a short passage into a plain-text editor. Check a name, a number, and a sentence. A failed search can mean absent text, an inaccurate text layer, or a reader limitation; it does not by itself prove the download is corrupt.

Some DjVu documents are spread across component files rather than bundled into one file. DjVuLibre's document-editor manual explains that a page can depend on shared data. Copying one component out of such a document may leave it without what it needs. Get the complete document from its source; an error is not permission to discard pages until the rest opens.

Three Files with the Same Pages and Different Words

We created two original pages, then encoded them losslessly as DjVu. One page contains French text, including café and boîte; the other includes The parcel contains 18 notebooks. Both use the identifier B-204.

We made three versions: no text layer, manually inserted correct text, and manually inserted wrong text. An OCR engine did not generate the errors. All six page renders—two pages in each of the three files—matched the corresponding source-image pixels exactly.

DownloadActual text extractionWhat remained visible
Image-only DjVuEmpty outputBoth original pages
Correct-text DjVuThe six authored lines, including 18 notebooks and B-204The same original pages
Wrong-text DjVu13 notebooks and B-2O4, with the letter O instead of zeroStill 18 notebooks and B-204

The first example is a readable image-only file, not a broken download. The third is more deceptive: it offers plausible but incorrect text while looking identical to the correct version. Successful selection or extraction is therefore only a presence check, not an accuracy check.

For readers using DjVuLibre, the following command extracts the text already stored in a file:

djvutxt book.djvu book-extracted.txt

Choose a new output filename. The djvutxt manual describes hidden-text extraction; this command does not recognize new words from page images. In our image-only sample it returned no text, while the intact file still decoded successfully. A deliberately truncated private copy instead made the decoder fail.

You can inspect the source pages and raw results and run the reproduction script using its instructions. The experiment ran on September 14, 2026, with Pillow 12.3.0 and Poppler 26.08.0. DjVuLibre's official download was labelled 3.5.30, while the compiled tools reported 3.5.29; both the archive hash and reported version are recorded.

This is a controlled text-layer demonstration, not an OCR accuracy benchmark, reader ranking, or BookTranslator translation test.

What Happened with a 251-Page Candide File

We also decoded the DjVu from Internet Archive item candideouloptim01voltgoog, cataloged as a French edition of Candide dated 1759. The 6,510,150-byte file downloaded on September 11 still matched the source's published checksums when we refreshed its metadata on September 14.

All 251 file pages decoded at a maximum size of 600 × 800 pixels. We separately rendered and visually inspected file pages 1, 5, 10, 125, and 251 at their native resolution. That sample included digitization information, handwritten notes, a chapter opener, a body page, and a visibly blank last page.

The existing text layer produced 207,204 UTF-8 bytes, with 246 page separators. Those counts do not mean that five pages are missing from the book: images and text are different checks, and the blank final page also returned no text. Nor does a large extracted file prove accuracy. On file page 10, the visible word Comment was extracted as CommcTit.

We converted only the five selected pages to PDF. The output had five pages, but Poppler's text extractor returned no non-whitespace text. This was not a full-book PDF conversion, full proofreading, or proof that the printed volume is complete. The inspection record and repeatable commands preserve the scope and exact source identifier.

Convert to PDF Only When the Next Step Needs It

If the book already reads well in your chosen application, stop there. Convert when a particular reader, printing workflow, or document tool requires PDF—not as a ritual for every DjVu download.

With DjVuLibre installed and PDF output enabled, this command converts a two-page selection:

ddjvu -format=pdf -page=1-2 book.djvu first-two-pages.pdf

Run it in a working directory and use an output filename that does not already exist. Confirm both pages open, then compare their orientation, edges, small text, and page count with the original. For a full conversion, omit -page=1-2 and use a different new output filename. We tested the two-page fixture and a five-page book selection, not every page of the real book as a PDF.

The critical limitation is in the ddjvu manual: its PDF output represents each page as an image. In our converted two-page PDF, the source DjVu's correct text layer did not carry over. pdftotext returned only two page-break characters.

That result is specific to this conversion path; it is not a claim that every DjVu-to-PDF program behaves identically. Whatever converter you use, repeat the search-and-copy check on the output, not only the source. A PDF icon is not proof of searchable text, accessible structure, or a reflowable book.

If adjustable type and comfortable narrow-screen reading are the real goal, first check whether the same edition has a usable EPUB. An image-based PDF will not become a reflowable EPUB simply by changing the extension. Our EPUB-versus-PDF guide explains that reading tradeoff.

Keep the Next Step Proportionate to the Problem

For reading, a working DjVu reader may be the endpoint. For a quotation, a short verified extract may be enough. If the PDF you made copies the wrong words, follow the PDF text-layer diagnosis before treating those words as source material.

Translation becomes relevant only when language is the remaining obstacle and you have a usable file with the necessary rights for that use. DjVu is not an accepted BookTranslator format in the product catalog checked for this guide. Renaming it .pdf does not convert it.

For a genuine PDF derivative, BookTranslator's PDF workflow is a possible next step. An image-only derivative needs recognition: OCR Mode rebuilds a translated PDF from recognized content rather than matching the original page layout exactly. We did not upload or translate these samples, so this guide does not establish their translation quality.

Keep the original DjVu and your checked reference pages. Opening, extracting, converting, and translating are separate steps; verify the result you need at each one.
